Cinnamon

Let's talk about the spice most of us know as Cinnamon.

If you are unaware of what this spice actually is, then I will tell you that it comes from the wet layer of the bark of a tree. Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of several tree species from the genus Cinnamomum. Cinnamon is the name for several species of trees and the commercial spice products that some of them produce. All are members of the genus Cinnamomum in the family Lauraceae. The most cultivated cinnamon comes from the species Cinnamomum cassia..

We have all used the spice to flower many desserts and some savory dishes, and I myself love to sprinkle some into my morning coffee, but cinnamon can be used as a healing spice for our body. In some studies, cinnamon has shown the potential to lower fasting glucose levels and appear to inhibit the buildup of a protein called tau in the brain, which is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.

Some of the research and studies are not super conclusive to show how beneficial cinnamon really can be but how can you go wrong with the comforting feeling you get when you start your day with a warm cinnamon roll or end your holiday feast with warm apple pie.
